Cherie Bomb
When Cherie Currie was 15 years old, she was the lead singer of one of the most groundbreaking bands of all time, The Runaways, an all girl punk rock band in the mid 70’s. She was bandmates with Joan Jett, another woman with her own entry in this series. Their debt single, whimsically represented in this set, was “Cherry Bomb.”
The entire piece is based around the perfect cherry design. It was magic how it all happened, all at once. The pressed glass cherries came first, then it was making them hang on antique brass chain instead of headpins. The image was perfect. Then the strange green glass was found in the Italian glass section, each handmade piece slightly different. The supply challenge was that I needed to make links, but only had headpins to manipulate. Luckily I had the steady hands that day. The big skill challenge was getting the eye pin up the “leaf” while having the chains fall on each side of the opening. I used a a red (Coral) Swarovski crystal to steady the large hole. The antique brass bubble chain was a natural choice. The toggles reminded me of a 1970’s motif I remember seeing on teenagers’ tshirts.
